On September 16, 2022, the Iran 1400 Project spoke with Dr. Pamela Karimi about her book “Alternative Iran: Contemporary Art and Critical Spatial Practice”. Dr. Karimi’s fascinating presentation described how Iranian artists engaged with space and sites amid the pressures of the art market and the state’s regulatory regimes. She highlighted the importance of non-governmental art and cultural scenes for the collective experience of Iranian artists and Iranian citizens. During the Q&A, she discussed topics such as how artists disseminate their work, and how the practice of alternative art-making in unconventional spaces can be situated within the analytical framework of prefiguration and the world-making capacity of art in Iran. She provided her personal account of interacting with artists and made predictions of what future spatial practices will look like.
