On September 18, 2023, the Iran 1400 Project interviewed Dr. Haideh Moghissi about the effects, obstacles, goals, and potential transformations of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. Dr. Moghissi underscored the deep historical significance of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” slogan for both women and minorities. She highlighted the importance of the uprising in generating divisions within the Islamic Republic’s establishment, including among its own members. Additionally, she explored the intricate methods of suppression used by the Islamic Republic to perpetuate its authority and pointed out the lack of support from the middle class and the absence of a well-defined organizational structure.

Haideh Moghissi is an Emerita Professor at York University in Toronto. Before leaving Iran in 1984, she was a founder of the Iranian National Union of Women and member of its first executive and editorial boards. As Canada’s leading scholar in gender and Islam, she has led a number of international collaborative research projects and was recipient of several major awards.
