On May 6, 2022, the Iran 1400 Project spoke with Dr. Mateo Mohammad Farzaneh about his book Iranian Women and Gender in the Iran-Iraq War. Dr. Farzaneh provided a fascinating presentation that detailed not only the different roles women played during the war, but also why their roles mattered to the Iranian people. Dr. Shirin Saeidi then joined the conversation as a discussant and used her abundant knowledge of Iranian women under the Islamic Republic to ask Dr. Farzaneh pertinent and thought-provoking questions that enabled the viewer to understand how women’s experiences during the role can be used to understand the plight of Iranian women today. The event ended with a lively Q&A session that touched on political prisoners, martyrs, the narrative of the Nezam, and more.
