On January 6, 2023, the Iran 1400 Project spoke with Dr. Marouf Cabi about his new book The Formation of Modern Kurdish Society in Iran: Modernity, Modernization and Social Change 1921-1979. Dr. Cabi explained how modernity placed Kurdish societies on a new path, leading to profound socio-economic, political, cultural, and geographical transformations. He outlined the key topics of his book, from the White Revolution to gender relations. During the Q&A session, he related the modernization of Kurdish society with the current protests in Iran, described women’s associations in further detail, and touched on Kurdish studies and what is missing in Kurdish academia.
Marouf Cabi is a Visiting Fellow at LSE's Middle East Centre. In addition to teaching Middle Eastern histories and cultures, he also works as an interpreter and prepares country reports for UK-based organizations and law firms.
