On November 2, 2023, Dr. Tom Walsh discussed his research on social media and Iran’s Gen Z uprising, focusing on how Iranians within the country and across the diaspora used TikTok to amplify the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement following the death of Mahsa Amini. Dr. Walsh explored the role of social media, particularly TikTok, as a visual and multimodal platform for protest, highlighting its power in shaping narratives and mobilizing younger generations.

Tom Walsh is a lecturer of International Relations at Northumbria University and an associate instructor at the London School of Economics. He is currently working on a new project on the Iranian women's movement, Iranian state propaganda, and the emancipatory use of TikTok by protestors.
