Kyle Olson specializes in the intersection of geopolitics and archaeology in Iran. His scholarship focuses on both the ancient world and the recent past. In the former, he studies the political geography of the Bronze Age, tracking patterns of exchange and the spatial-demographic organization of early complex polities. In the latter, he investigates the reciprocal relationship between geopolitics and the practice of archaeology from the nineteenth century to the present.
